The Lodge was used for hunting and as a holiday retreat. The family were great hosts and enjoyed among their noble guests Sir Henry Fairfax-Lucy, Viscount Churchill and King Edward VII.

Mamore Lodge in Winter

"The Lodge was built in 1905 on land owned by the Fairfax-Lucy family. It replaced an earlier Mamore Lodge lower down the hill in the village itself. Constructed by British Aluminium - now Alcan Smelting and Power UK - as part of a deal to obtain more land for housing smelter workers in the village of Kinlochleven. Though the plant is now closed, much has been done to transform the village into an atractive walking centre. The new Lodge sits on a plateau, facing south, apporximately 700ft above the village and on the lower slopes of Am Bodach (The Old Man)."

The date was September 1909 and the place was Mamore Hunting Lodge, high above Kinlochleven. The King was on his first official visit to the area and was there specifically for shooting.
